Power Without the Queue: Why Small-Scale Advanced Fission and Fusion Belong Next to the Data Center

March 31, 2027 11:00 am - 11:30 am

U.S. data center growth is running into limits on power, time and community acceptance, and nuclear energy could address all three. In this fireside chat, Zap Energy CEO Zabrina Johal and former NRC commissioner Jeffrey S. Merrifield make the case for 25-megawatt, liquid-metal-cooled advanced fission systems: modular, sited next to a data center campus, and supplying firm, carbon-free power around the clock. They'll describe a transition led by data centers, from natural gas to fission microreactors and then to fusion, potentially with hybrid systems in between, where fusion inherits what fission built: qualified sites, licensing precedent, trained operators, a domestic supply chain, and communities that have lived next to a working plant. That sequence is what turns promising nuclear technologies into a U.S.-built global industry.
